So, over the last couple of years, I have had a lot of questions about Modern Inklings and what the name means. In case you missed it, here is the link to my post last week explaining the meaning of the name Modern Inklings. But, here is a little backstory.
When I wanted to name this community, I struggled with coming up with a name that was creative, that didn’t sound too stuffy, too serious, or too institutional. Since creativity is not a strong suit of mine, I decided to gather a group of young, creative minds I had the privilege of being surrounded by at the time. I presented them with my challenge and asked them to provide me with a good name. Through discussion and some pretty “interesting” names being thrown out, Inklings was presented. Most in the group knew of my affinity for C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, and they offered the name Modern Inklings. After some consideration and rolling it over in my mind for some time, I landed on the name.
But, here is the rest of the story… (Paul Harvey would be so proud)
Since making that decision, I have struggled with the name at times. Wondering if it was too abstract, too nerdy, or just plain uninteresting. I knew it needed some explanation, but I wasn’t sure it was worth the effort to provide any explanation. At one point I even started moving away from the name because my critical mind couldn’t embrace it. That is until this last year unfolded.
This conversation with these young creative minds took place 2 years before I started my doctoral program and 4 years before I decided to focus on strategic foresight. Last year when I made the commitment to go with foresight and gear my studies that direction, God began to open my eyes to understand he has known all along the purpose of Modern Inklings. He knew how it all fit in and he knew what the right steps were. Despite my doubt, my uncertainty, and my lack of confidence in the name, Yahweh had things in hand all along. When you read last week’s post, you will see how God was 10 steps ahead of me all along, even when I didn’t understand.
You may be there today. Trying to make sense of things, and unsettled in the path you are walking. Hang on to God, run after him, and trust the details in his masterful hands of craftsmanship. He will form you, mold you, and create a masterpiece out of your life.
